Sport is a huge part of life here, and all of our pupils are encouraged to take part in as many sporting activities as possible, whatever their ability or aspirations. There are no stereotypes and sport at Shebbear is inclusive and supportive - everyone gets stuck in, gives it their best and cheers each other on - whether they are one of our elite sportsmen or women or are trying a sport for the first time.
Taking part in sporting activities teaches important skills for life, and above all we emphasise the values of commitment, teamwork, grit, communication and enjoyment. Our school values of courage, confidence and resilience shine through in all sporting activity at Shebbear and our pupils are humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Aside from the competitive nature of sport, it is about getting together with friends, getting outdoors and leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Our pupils enjoy an extensive programme of co-curricular sport from the Prep School up to the Sixth Form. Alongside developing key skills in our main sports of rugby, hockey, netball, football, basketball, cricket, tennis and athletics, we provide our pupils with a wide range of other activities to choose from such as swimming, Martial Arts, dance, gymnastics, surfing, horse riding, hiking, table tennis, badminton, rowing and trampolining. Pupils are always encouraged to try something new.
Our sports facilities are excellent and include our gym, weights room, dance studio, sports hall, all weather floodlit pitch and numerous playing fields. We have specialist coaches for our key sports and our fixture list is extensive with competition encouraged at all levels. The PE department also runs numerous inter-house competitions throughout the year.
Elite Sports Development Programme
Although we are a relatively small school, we achieve extremely highly in the sporting arena, regularly winning school tournaments in our main sports. Many of our talented pupils play for local academy squads with others having been selected for county or even national teams. Because our coaches and teachers know each child individually, we are quick to spot potential and positive character attributes, giving our pupils every opportunity to develop and grow their strengths and ability.
We have recently launched our Elite Sports Development Programme for our Sports Scholars and high performance athletes. This is a personalised programme where each individual is given their own unique training plan, bespoke to their needs and goals, from diet to strength and conditioning training, specialist coaching, mental and physical health and fitness. Pupils on this programme take part in dedicated sessions as part of their school timetable.
Opportunities for Talented Athletes
We have a high number of gifted and talented rugby players here at Shebbear and as such we have developed strong links with Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club and Brunel University, with opportunities available each year for our pupils to gain scholarships to study at Brunel University and join the Ealing Academy.
We also work closely with Saracens RFC and Exeter Chiefs and run exchange programmes for our sportsmen and women with schools in Australia and South Africa as well as regular sports tours.
