Because of our rural location, we want to make travel to and from our school as easy as possible for our pupils and parents. As such, we run extensive bus routes across Devon and Cornwall, which are used by many of our day pupils in the Prep and Senior School.
We currently provide bus services to Barnstaple, Bideford, Hartland, Bude, Launceston, Holsworthy, Okehampton, Great Torrington, Morwenstow, Bradworthy, Bridestowe, Copplestone, Merton, Petrockstowe and Dolton.
Some of our buses are run by local coach company Taw & Torridge, and some are our school minibuses. All buses are bespoke to Shebbear College and all of our drivers are fully DBS checked.
It is very important to us that our pupils feel happy and safe on the buses and as such, we place great emphasis on behaviour and conduct. Prep School pupils are escorted to their bus at the end of every day by a teacher.
Pupils in Prep 4 (Year 4) and above are able to travel independently on transport provided by the school. For pupils in Prep 3 (Year 3) and below, we operate a Bus Chaperone Policy whereby they are able to travel on school transport, provided they are accompanied both to and from school by a chaperone (an older pupil at Shebbear College known to the child). Please see the policy for more details.
Our bus timetable is based on demand from current pupils. Whilst individual cases will be considered carefully, transport is planned each year to ensure routes are optimised for the whole school community.
Home to school bus services shown here are only available to pupils on roll at Shebbear College and do not form any kind of publicly available service.
The cost of school transport is heavily subsidised by over 80% by the school, representing excellent value for money. The costs for 2023-2024 are:
£150 per term for journeys under 10 miles.
£200 per term for journeys over 10 miles.
