Our Headmaster

A short message from our Headmaster Mr Simon Weale.
Mr. S. D. Weale MA (Oxon)
Headmaster

I am honoured and thrilled to be Headmaster of Shebbear College. My wife Rebecca and I, with our three children Saskia, Jabez and Delilah, arrived in Shebbear in April 2013, and we are really grateful for the warm welcome shown to us by everyone.

I aim to preserve the many excellent features of this historic and successful school, but I do have a strong commitment to continued improvement through careful change. You can be sure that I will protect the Shebbear ethos of ensuring that it is a school full of happy and confident children. I am also committed to developing the work of the Old Shebbearians’ Association in connecting and supporting the wider Shebbearian community. The support will continue to grow and develop both for students during their studies here and then through university and beyond.

I will continue to improve academic standards so that every pupil secures results (and grades) that give them an advantage and open doors of opportunity, and I will ensure that Shebbear continues to offer an extensive extra-curricular programme. Students will enjoy sport, music, drama, the arts, Model United Nations, public speaking, cultural opportunities, outdoor education such as the Ten Tors and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, trips locally and abroad and, of course, academic enrichment. It is through such opportunities that students are able to develop key qualities such as resilience, leadership, and teamwork, thereby developing a natural confidence which will serve them well in the future. These are vital aspects of the education you are investing in.

I have worked in several schools before joining Shebbear. I began at the Judd School in Tonbridge, a state grammar school, and then moved to Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith where I was Head of Year and managed the school’s Activities Week. At Reigate Grammar School I was Head of Sixth Form, responsible for maintaining academic standards and preparing students for university. In my last post as Deputy Head at Brentwood School I looked after the pastoral needs of over one thousand students. I am sure my experiences to date will serve me well in my new post. I am a very keen sportsman and I have played in and coached some very successful rugby and cricket teams. However, I am genuinely interested in all of the extra-curricular activities that we offer at the College and will be a keen and enthusiastic supporter of these.

My daughter Saskia left the Shebbear College Sixth Form in 2014 and is now studying History at the University of Warwick. My son Jabez is in our Senior School and my daughter Delilah is in our Prep School.  I hope this reassures you that my commitment to the College is absolute.

I have already met many of you, but if not I am sure we will meet very soon in and around the College.

Until then and with all best wishes.
Simon Weale

A WELL-ROUNDED EDUCATION

We take great pride in our pupils’ academic successes.

Entry to the College is not selective and yet students consistently out-perform national trends. By providing a supportive and nurturing environment, Shebbear develops a pupil’s sense of self worth, enthusiasm for learning and optimism for the future. We foster responsibility, tolerance, commitment and respect, both for the individual and for society. Set in a wonderful rural environment, the college has a unique sense of community.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES

We offer our pupils a wealth of additional activities to build key personal skills.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in a number of exciting and challenging extra-curricular activities after school, in the evenings, at weekends and also various trips within the UK and abroad.

The programme is designed to broaden horizons and develop not only interests but personal qualities such as leadership, confidence and tenacity. Given our wonderful location, close to both sea and moor, outdoor pursuits are extremely popular.

ENJOY SPORTING EXCELLENCE

We have a strong sporting tradition with fixtures across the South West.

At Shebbear College we understand that Physical Education plays an integral role in ensuring that all pupils stay healthy by achieving physical, social, cultural and mental well-being. Despite the relatively small size of year groups the College participates in a strong fixture lists against all of the major sporting schools in the South West.

For boys the major games are rugby, football and cricket and for the girls major games are hockey, netball and rounders.

MUSICAL EXCELLENCE

Our dedicated Music Department is the perfect environment for our pupils to learn and enjoy.

Music is introduced to pupils from Kindergarten onward and pupils of all ages can develop their abilities through the school choirs and the wide range of instruments available to them and are actively encouraged to participate in concerts and performances.

Students are exposed to a wide variety of music styles from the distant past to the present day and from far off lands to British folk. Wherever possible, technology is used to enhance learning especially in the realm of composing.

THE CREATIVE ARTS

If you have a creative flair our Art Department at will be your perfect home.

With large studios and excellent equipment and materials all our pupils have a tremendous opportunity to fully develop their artist skills and interests.

We all believe that it is critically important to help a young person develop his or her creative abilities and that Art is ideally placed to serve this purpose. We attempt to offer a broad based art education – one in which our pupils not only gain many useful skills (drawing, painting etc), but also begin to understand Art in a wide context (through investigating artists and galleries).
