Sport at Shebbear
At Shebbear College pupils receive outstanding coaching in our major sports including rugby, football, hockey, netball, cricket and athletics.
We are proud of our sporting ethos, which prioritises the enjoyment of sport and the development of character & skill set over a results-based approach. Success in sport takes on many forms and at Shebbear we value sporting excellence and nurturing talent as much as we value good sportsmanship and a young person participating in their first fixture. This ethos helps to contribute greatly to pupils’ wider personal development.
We aim to extend and challenge our most able pupils and teams, whilst providing opportunities for all pupils to represent the College. This is achieved through selection of sporting fixtures, including playing local club teams to provide variation in competition.
Senior Sport
An extremely well qualified staff team of experienced PE teachers and sports coaches provide the best possible environment for pupils to thrive and develop in sport at Shebbear.
With dedicated team sport sessions every week, in addition to games afternoons and PE lessons, our pupils are given the very best opportunity to develop and improve their skills in a range of sports in an inclusive and encouraging environment.
We are always looking to reflect on and improve our sporting offering. Currently we are committed to developing our girls’ football and rugby provision. In addition, the enthusiasm for basketball over the past year has resulted in a good number of fixtures and mixed hockey is another area of growth. We are keen to continue developing these areas over the next few years.
As a small school we pride ourselves in ensuring that our fixtures programme is bespoke, agile and responsive to the needs of the pupils. Where there is an interest, we aim to provide opportunity.
An extremely successful summer sports programme has included regional and national success in athletics and County Cup representation in cricket for boys and girls.
Prep School Sport
The main aim for sport in the Prep school is to provide as many opportunities as possible for our pupils. With the help of specialist senior PE staff, we aim to steer away from the tradition of boys playing rugby and girls playing netball by organising fixtures in all our major sports for all pupils. Boys and girls all playing netball, rugby (tag or contact), football, hockey and cricket is central in the long term athletic development of the pupils.
This approach benefits our young athletes as they participate in a range of sports and become more adept at learning new concepts and rules, whilst becoming more physically literate. This also helps to break down barriers in sport, making sport more accessible for all by increasing engagement and enjoyment.
