A day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18 in Shebbear, Devon

Netball

Netball is one of our major girls’ sports at Shebbear College. We train all year around, including in our 360@Sheb programme, and play the majority our fixtures in the Lent term. Saturday fixtures consist of all year groups playing schools such as Mount Kelly, West Buckland, Plymouth College and Truro School. Fixtures also regularly occur during our games afternoons week when we play local state and independent opposition. Here, every girl will have the opportunity to represent the College. In 2024 we qualified for the Independent Schools Association National Finals at U13 level, a fantastic achievement and a great experience for all involved.

Alongside a comprehensive fixture card, pupils enjoy an hour of team practice every week with a focus on skill development and understanding how to build on each performance. The pupils also have the opportunity to join a local Netball club, with the school taking a minibus to training on a Wednesday evening.

Mrs Burges, PE teacher and experienced Level 2 coach, leads the netball programme, supported by other experienced teachers and coaches. This allows us to play multiple fixtures at the same time with well-qualified and friendly staff on hand to help players develop their game.

Favourite thing about your job?

Netball is the obvious one, the coaching, the fixtures, the progress. Also, giving pupils the knowledge and confidence to see themselves as a netball, rugby or football player. Ultimately, helping to develop a sense of identity through sport, which is really rewarding.

Sporting Hero?

My current favourite is Mary Earps.

Favourite food?

I think it would have to be Thai food, specifically a green prawn curry would be at the top of the list. Pick N Mix is my weakness though!

PGCE in Secondary PE with QTS

Favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing about teaching sport at Shebbear is the large variety of sport I get to coach. This gives all pupils a chance to find an activity they love and will be able to continue with in later life.

Sporting Hero?

Cricket has always been my main sport so sticking to that theme, I’ve got to say my sporting hero growing up was Jos Butler.

Favourite food?

My favourite food by far has got to be pizza – specifically a margarita but I may push the boat out to a pepperoni.
