Welcome to our Sixth Form
The Sixth Form at Shebbear College blends academic achievement and exam success with fun and friendship. We are welcoming and unpretentious, developing the strengths and aspirations of every student in a supportive and caring environment. Our small class sizes and compassionate teachers enable us to focus on each pupil as an individual, tailoring their Sixth Form experience to enable them to achieve their potential.
We welcome new students into our Sixth Form, and offer a range of Scholarships for talented students wishing to join our supportive community at this crucial time in their education.
The Sixth Formers are based in our modern Sixth Form Centre, with access to a wealth of impressive facilities, including a range of sports pitches and courts, a gym, weights room, dance studio, superbly equipped Music Centre and specialist Creative and Performing Arts venues.
We are proud of our Sixth Form students who consistently achieve excellent examination results year on year and go on to some of the world’s most prestigious universities. The A Level and BTEC courses are complimented with an Extended Project Qualification which focuses students on a topic of their choice and helps develop the essential skills and attitudes required for immediate academic success, as well as offering a life skill for university and a prosperous career.
Our co-curricular programme is second to none and all Sixth Form students have the opportunity to participate in a number of exciting and challenging activities and projects including Ten Tors, Duke of Edinburgh, Eco-Schools, charity work and trips abroad, broadening their horizons, building their confidence and developing leadership skills.
All Sixth Formers will take part in regular tutorial sessions covering topics such as study skills, student finance, gap year opportunities and C.V. writing and interviews, as well as regular debating sessions.
Our Sixth Form curriculum provides a range of subjects for students. Every effort will be made to take your son or daughters individual requirements into consideration, so their subject choices are met wherever possible. Devoted academic teachers and tutors will be with your son or daughter throughout their time in Sixth Form. Most crucially, dedicated UCAS sessions guide parents and students through the complex process of university applications and career choices. During their time in the Sixth Form, students will stay with their designated personal tutor throughout the two years. Tutors will help and support each individual with their workload as well as oversee applications for Higher Education or employment.
A number of Sixth Form students take advantage of our boarding provision. The time saved by not travelling in the evenings allows for extra studying, and academic staff are on site to help with any academic or pastoral matters. We offer full boarding, weekly boarding and flexi boarding, every option to suit your personal requirements.
Our Sixth Form students enjoy a number of dedicated social events each year, culminating in the formal Sixth Form Rounsfell Dinner. It is recognised that a student’s time in the Sixth Form is enhanced with additional activities such as charity work in Uganda, a history and ethics trip to Europe and exchange opportunities with schools in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
