New York Trip 2019

Jo ConwayArt, CoCurricular, Senior School

Shebbear College Art and Creative Media Department organised a trip to New York from the 16-20th October. This amazing opportunity full of activities and adventures in one of the world’s most iconic cities was open to F4 to U6 and 15 students embarked on this incredible adventure with Ms Davies and Mr Barlow.

Day 1

Arrived and after a meal at the famous Heartland Brewery in the basement of the Empire State Building, we went to see the pre-season game of the Knicks v Atlanta Hawks, with all the cheerleaders and excitement of waving orange foam fingers. Jack and Tom explored the food court and came back with piles of hot dogs and chips.

Day 2

Travelled to the south of Manhattan Island to a workshop with Claude Kerven, chair of the Filmmaking department of the New York Film Academy. We then went through Battery Park to see the Staten Island Ferry and the Empire State Building and ended up at the Seaglass Carousel. Then off to Brookfield Plaza for lunch and to visit some very expensive shops before paying our respects at the World Trade Centre 9/11 Memorial. We then walked the length of the Brooklyn Bridge before going to the cafe with the best cannelloni in New York. Then it was the Empire State Building for the most incredible views over Manhattan and the islands. The girls had many Gossip Girl moments and updated their Instagram.

Day 3

We started with a coach trip through the movie and film sites, Danny our guide was so enthusiastic that he didn’t want to let us go. We saw the sites of the Marvel films, Friends and so many more and learnt about how film crews are assembled and how locations are booked. Then off to Queens to the MOMI, the museum of the moving image to learn about camerawork and special effects and how editing and sound can be added after the main development to create different effects. Then to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where everyone scattered to find their own favourite area, and Mr Barlow saw ALL of it. We then wandered through Central Park to the Hard Rock Cafe for a much needed singalong, (thanks Kieran, George, Joel and Nathan). We then finished up watching Beetlejuice!, the hot new show on Broadway still with the original cast. Niamh was so happy her eyes were shining!

Day 4

Our last day in New York was a bit more relaxed, we took a casual stroll around the beautiful Radio City Music Hall and saw them setting up for the Christmas extravaganza. It was absolutely incredible with the original decor restored from the 1930s. Then some shopping time where we managed to get to almost everywhere we wanted to go. Afterwards we headed to NBC, the home of Saturday Night Live. The crew made their own hilarious TV show starring George and Timon. Thanks Amy for the laughter! Finally we collected our belongings and headed for the airport, exhausted but inspired. New York 2022, get ready, it really doesn’t sleep!
