Welcome to our Foundation Stage Unit
Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Unit comprises our friendly Pre-School which caters for children from the age of 2, and our Reception Class for children rising 5 years of age.
We follow the National Curriculum in three distinct learning phases from Preschool 1 to Reception, with the learning being delivered in a Montessori style – self-learning is supported by our highly professional EYFS staff.
- Pre-School unit for children from the age of 2 years old
- Dedicated learning area for Reception children
- The only Pre-School with an 85 acre campus!
- Weekly PE, Forest School, French, Cookery and Music Sessions
- Large, safe garden and outdoor play area
- Interaction with the whole school community
- Bespoke ‘settling-in’ programme
Phonics, Literacy and Numeracy lessons are enhanced by regular Forest School, French, Music, Art, PE and Cookery sessions. The children enjoy some of these sessions together as one group, with the Reception class working in a seperate classroom for phonics, literacy and maths lessons, following the Foundation Stage curriculum as well as preparing to move up to Key Stage 1.
Our EYFS Manager works with parents to ensure that there is a bespoke settling in programme so that all our pupils get the best out of their time at school.
30 Hours Early Years Funding
We are registered for the Tax Free Childcare Scheme. We offer Early Years Funding to cover 30 hours per week for 2 and 3 year olds. You can use your entitlement in a flexible way over various sessions and you do not have to use all 30 hours.
Why is our Early Years setting unique?
We have a wonderful outdoor play area that is a safe and vibrant where our children can play and learn. Beyond this, our 85 acre rural school campus offers an ideal space for the children to explore and interact with the wider school community.
We regularly take the children to visit departments in the Senior School such as our Science Laboratories, Art Studios, Music Centre and Sixth Form Centre where they meet older pupils and take part in exciting activities.
They also enjoy weekly Forest School sessions in our woodland areas and regular trips to local attractions as well as visits from interesting guests.
Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the seven areas of learning are delivered through a balance of adult led and child initiated activities:
- Personal, Social & Emotional Development
- Communication & Language
- Physical Development
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts & Design
Included in the EYFS curriculum are regular French, Mathematics, Literacy and Music lessons along with Cookery, PE, Art and a variety of other subjects.
The initial phase of a young person’s education should be exciting and rewarding. At Shebbear College we achieve this by providing a reassuring, safe and happy environment.
We believe in promoting the independence and social skills of all children in our care, encouraging them to grow into happy and confident children as they learn through play, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Through observations and interests shown, topics are planned which will develop and enhance their learning in a fun and challenging way.
Children are welcomed into our Pre-School as they reach the age of 2 and are able to remain here at Shebbear for their entire education.
