A day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18 in Shebbear, Devon

Pre-Prep & Prep Curriculum

In the Pre-Prep and Prep School our teachers implement high standards of teaching and learning, adopting different approaches and using a range of resources that will enable every child, whatever their ability, to make accelerated progress.

At the same time, they aim to develop pupils’ independence, equipping them with the skills necessary to make choices for themselves and give them the confidence to back their own judgement, without the fear of getting things wrong - it’s good to make mistakes!

Each child’s progress is assessed and monitored throughout their time in the Pre-Prep and Prep School and through to the Senior School, meaning that we can be sure we are meeting their needs. Some children need extra support to help them in reading, writing and Maths, and clear individual educational programmes (IEPs) are in place for any child that needs them, delivered through one-to-one sessions, small group work and in general classroom support.

Reception (EYFS)

Our Reception Class follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, with the seven areas of learning delivered through a balance of adult led and child initiated activities:

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development
  • Communication & Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

Included in the EYFS curriculum are regular French, Mathematics, Literacy and Music lessons along with Cookery, PE, Art and a variety of other subjects.

Prep 1 & 2 (KS1)

In Years 1 and 2 the children follow a rich and varied curriculum including English and Maths in the mornings and Topic work – encompassing Science, History Geography, Art and Craft in the afternoons.

In addition to this the children have French, Computing, Music, Drama, RE, PHSE, Games, PE and Gymnastics lessons; some of which are taught by specialist subject teachers.

Prep 3 - 6 (KS2)

Throughout the Prep School the main areas of learning are English, Maths, Science, Humanities, Computing, Art, Drama, Music, Modern Foreign Languages, Sport and PHSE (Life Skills & Moral and Spiritual Wellbeing). Children are taught by a full-time class teacher for most subjects, with specialist teachers for some areas including PE, Outdoor Education, Art, French, Science, Computing and Music.

We make the most of our beautiful surroundings by taking learning outside whenever we can and enhance the curriculum through trips, visits and inspirational guests.
