Prep School Music
Music is central to the life and experience offered to all pupils at Shebbear College. Each day pupils will be found involved in music making, from singing to instrumental playing.
As an academic subject, Music is taught to all classes by qualified specialist music teachers. Each year group receives a weekly 65 minute lesson. Pupils have access to the Music Department facilities, which includes a Keyboard Room, Mac Suite of 20 Computers, and a classroom containing a variety of percussion instruments. By following a practical, hands on approach, pupils’ knowledge and appreciation of music is developed through the study of a wide variety of genres.
Each half term the curriculum focuses on a different element and style of music, for example rhythm and African Drumming, texture and Programme music, harmony and The Blues.
All pupils at the College sing on a regular basis. Each week the pupils receive a dedicated singing session. The College is very fortunate in having highly specialist singing coaches who train and coach the pupils. Pupils are able to celebrate their singing at the annual Harvest Festival, Christmas Carol Services held in the College’s Chapel.
School productions involve pupils from all years in joint drama and musical ventures on a large scale! Recent productions have included Joseph and His Amazing Coloured Dream Coat
Class instrumental tuition is integral to the pupils’ musical development; Years 2 and 3 receive small group violin lessons as part of the College’s String Programme. Years 3 and 4 study the recorder, Years 5 and 6 the keyboard as well as all classes learning to play percussion instruments from djembes to glockenspiels. Pupils use music technology from an early age to develop their understanding of music theory and this includes the use of Sibelius software and Garage Band to explore compositional techniques.
