Bringing together pupils from Years 5 to 8, alongside a lively chorus from Years 3 and 4, the Middle School production has quickly become a much-anticipated part of the school calendar. Following the success of The Lion King Jr. in 2024 and Mary Poppins Jr. last year, expectations were high – and this year’s cast certainly did not disappoint.

At the heart of the production were three outstanding Year 7 performers. Edith (Performing Arts Scholar) shone in the title role, perfectly capturing Matilda’s intelligence and cheeky spirit, complemented by a lovely singing voice. Amelia brought warmth and sincerity to the role of Miss Honey, while fellow Performing Arts Scholar Bella impressed as the fearsome Miss Trunchbull, commanding the stage with confidence and humour.

The wider cast added plenty of character and comedy throughout. Henry and Violet were wonderfully entertaining as the larger-than-life Mr and Mrs Wormwood, while Jack delighted the audience as Bruce Bogtrotter – particularly during the unforgettable cake scene! Supported by a committed and energetic ensemble, the entire cast worked together to deliver a polished and thoroughly enjoyable performance.

Musical highlights included favourites such as Miracle, School Song, Naughty and Revolting Children, with the talented chorus adding energy and richness to every number. The production was brought vividly to life through colourful costumes, slick choreography, and the dedication of both cast and crew.

A special mention must also go to the senior pupils who supported the production behind the scenes, providing technical and backstage expertise to ensure everything ran smoothly.

This joyful production was a true celebration of creativity, teamwork and confidence, and is a wonderful reflection of the strength of performing arts at Shebbear College. With such talent coming through the Middle School, there is much to look forward to in the years ahead.
