Huge congratulations to two of our exceptionally talented musicians on their outstanding recent achievements.
We’re incredibly proud of Dolly (Form 5) and Cherrie (Form 3), who have both been awarded the highest possible result in their Grade 8 music examinations, achieving Distinction. Dolly on the flute and Cherrie on the piano.
Reaching Grade 8 is a significant milestone for any musician, representing the culmination of years of disciplined practice, technical development and musical expression. To achieve a Distinction at this level is a remarkable accomplishment at any age, but especially so for students as young as Dolly and Cherrie. In fact, Cherrie was just 13 years old when she sat her exam, making her success even more impressive.
Cherrie, who is a boarder from Hong Kong, spoke of her delight at the result: “I was really happy when I got the result – I worked really hard and I’m proud of myself. I was aiming for a distinction but I wasn’t sure if I would get it. I’m going to do my Diploma next, which is the next level after Grade 8.”
Dolly, who is currently studying for her GCSEs while also preparing to take her Grade 8 Piano, reflected on the experience: “It didn’t really hit me that my exam was coming up, so in the two weeks before, I played every single night, hoping I’d pass. When I came out of the exam, I thought it had gone OK—but when I found out it was a distinction, it was a bit of a shock!”
Head of Creative and Performing Arts at Shebbear College, Rebecca Sadler-Smith, highlighted the significance of their achievement: “Grade 8 is typically the highest qualification our pupils study for. It reflects the many hours they’ve dedicated to their instruments. To achieve a Grade 8 distinction, especially when these girls aren’t yet in Sixth Form, is incredible. We are very proud of them!”
Their achievements are a true reflection of their dedication, perseverance and passion for music, as well as the commitment they have shown to their music alongside their academic studies. We are delighted to celebrate their success and particularly proud of the example they set for younger musicians across the school. Their accomplishments highlight not only individual talent, but also the vibrant musical culture within our community.
Well done to Dolly and Cherrie – your hard work has truly paid off, and we look forward to seeing what you achieve next.
