The 1stXV Rugby Boys were involved in the Jonny Wilkinson Cup at Rencomb College on Sunday 11th November. After agonisingly losing in a close game to Mount Kelly in the final of last years tournament, there was plenty of ambition from the Shebbear Squad. The pool games saw Shebbear put together some impressive performances, dispatching Milton Abbey, Rencomb, Kingsley and Ewell Castle. The winners of the tournament was once again to be decided in the final between Shebbear and Mount Kelly.
Early on Mount Kelly benefited from a penalty and took a 3-0 lead. After a period of sustained pressure Mount Kelly managed to overcome some spirited defending by Shebbear and extended their lead with a try just before half time. Shebbear responded well in the second half with a series of attacks and much of the possession and went close to scoring on two occasions at the death only to be repelled by excellent Mount Kelly defence. The final whistle blew and Mount Kelly took the spoils 10-0 , for the second season in a row.
In spite of the defeat Shebbear can look forward to the upcoming home fixture against Mount Kelly with a high degree of optimism.
