A day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18 in Shebbear, Devon

Sport at Shebbear

Sport is a huge part of life here, and all of our pupils are encouraged to take part in as many sporting activities as possible, whatever their ability or aspirations. There are no stereotypes and sport at Shebbear is inclusive and supportive – everyone gets stuck in, gives it their best and cheers each other on – whether they are one of our high performance sportsmen or women or are trying a sport for the first time.

In 2021 we were finalists in the Sporting Achievement category of the prestigious Independent Schools of the Year awards, out of hundreds of schools across the country and in 2022 we were again shortlisted for this award.

SOCS SPORTS PORTAL

Taking part in sporting activities teaches important skills for life, and above all we emphasise the values of commitment, teamwork, grit, communication and enjoyment. Our school values of courage, confidence and resilience shine through in all sporting activity at Shebbear and our pupils are humble in victory and gracious in defeat. From our Sports Scholars and high performance athletes to those who simply enjoy the opportunity to get outdoors with friends as part of a healthy and active lifestyle, everyone is encouraged to get involved.

All of our pupils enjoy an extensive programme of co-curricular sport from the Prep School up to the Sixth Form. Alongside developing key skills in our main sports of rugby, hockey, netball, football, basketball, cricket, tennis and athletics, we provide our pupils with a wide range of other activities to choose from such as swimming, Martial Arts, dance, gymnastics, surfing, horse riding, hiking, table tennis, badminton, rowing and trampolining.

Our Equestrian team has developed over the last few years and we are now home to a number of talented riders, who compete as a school team at the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) events – travelling to the National Finals at Hickstead each year. They also take part in various other competitions around the country and in 2024 one of our riders competed at Badminton Grassroots.

Our sports facilities are excellent and include our gym, weights room, dance studio, sports hall, all weather floodlit pitch and numerous playing fields. We have specialist coaches for our key sports and our fixture list is extensive with competition encouraged at all levels. The PE department also runs numerous inter-house competitions throughout the year.
