A day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18 in Shebbear, Devon

Surfing England Scheme

Surfing is one of our off-campus 360@Sheb activities, taking place on a Friday each week at North Devon Surf School in Westward Ho!, a Surfing England Accredited Surf School.

Our surfers follow the Surfing England Junior Surfer scheme, otherwise known as GROM SQUAD, run by a specialised coach and aimed at fast tracking surfing skills The programme is suitable for beginners through to experienced surfers, with a tailored step-by-step plan to guide each individual on their surfing journey, whilst learning about ocean safety, marine conservation, equipment use and maintenance and the environment!

The GROM SQUAD scheme progresses through five levels, from Level 1: Catching Waves, where surfers learn about equipment, how to ride a board and how to catch a wave, through to Level 5: Advanced Techniques, learning about good wave selection and confident board skills combined with a solid knowledge of safety and surfing. Students that surf already can join in at any level and the programme can be used to evidence competency for surf coach qualifications and competitions.

Each student keeps a Surfing England Log Book, which is updated each week and records achievements and areas to focus on. Once a level is completed, they move on to the next one and by the time they reach Level 5, they are well on their way to becoming an expert surfer.

There is no time limit to attain the levels, since surfing is all about the length of time you spend in the water, and needs lots of practice. It can take time to be a real pro but it is a great way of having fun. As long as you try hard, no matter what your level, you have succeeded in becoming a truly committed surfer.

The best surfer in the World is the one having the most fun.
