Curriculum Overview
At Shebbear our curriculum is rich and varied, offering pupils a wide range of different experiences. The broader the curriculum, the more opportunities every child will have to find their particular set of gifts and talents and build the confidence to shine.
We are not an academically selective school, and do not offer places based on an entrance exam, however we continuously assess the levels and merits of every child on an individual basis, to ensure that we are able to provide each individual with the skills needed to succeed, both academically and outside of the classroom, and thrive in whatever they choose to do in the future.
We promote excellence across the curriculum and co-curriculum, and you can see evidence of this across the school – on the sports field, in the creative arts and in the academic classroom. Our aim is to build confidence and enjoyment of learning in all our pupils, which we do through the individual attention that we can offer them.
Children who join us must be able to access our mainstream curriculum and demonstrate our school values of compassion, courage, courtesy, curiosity, creativity and confidence in all that they do.
We follow the National Curriculum throughout the school from Reception to Upper 6, but broaden and adapt its scope to ensure that lessons are delivered to suit the abilities and interests of each pupil. Every child is different and our curriculum and approach to teaching and learning enables them all to achieve their potential. Our location and campus enables us to take learning outdoors where possible, providing depth and variation to teaching and learning.
We aim to provide opportunities and support to nurture the gifts and talents of all pupils, both in terms of academic achievement and personal and social development. We have a wide curriculum enrichment programme in place, enabling pupils to develop their skills and interests in different areas.
We also regularly introduce new initiatives put forward by our pupils and provide a vast range of opportunities for the development of leadership skills. Our 360@Sheb co-curricular programme is broad with many of our clubs and charity initiatives proposed by the pupils themselves.
