The Chemistry Department was delighted to welcome back one of our Alumni to the College last week. Will Balkwill-Western offered to drop in just before the start of the second year of his Masters degree in Chemistry at Cardiff University. Will spoke with the Sixth Form Chemistry students about his experience studying A Level Chemistry at Shebbear, and reflected on how his efforts here had prepared him for his first year studying the subject at undergraduate level.
Will assisted in two practical investigations and was able to share his knowledge and understanding of the structure and bonding of substances with the Lower Sixth at the start of their course. Will also assisted the Upper Sixth with their investigation into the reactions of ligands within the complex ions of d-block transition metals, and helped our students to see their current studies as forming part of a longer sequence of exploration within the Sciences.
We all wish Will the very best of luck with his career in Chemistry and hope he will pop back next year and keep us posted as to how he is getting on.
