Summer 2010

Cricket -U13s v West Buckland Sat.24th April

West Buckland batted first and lost their opener to James Dawe in the first over. However, a second wicket partnership of 85 saw Shebbear under pressure, before Timmy Kivell bowled the West Buckland captain with his first delivery. Wickets fell at regular intervals after that and West Buckland closed their innings on 155-7

A steady start for Shebbear, with Tom Cappleman-Lynes scoring 26, kept the home side up with the required rate, but at 58-3 there was still much to be done. Harry Landymore joined skipper Bailey Ward and the pair added a vital 57 with Ward going on to score 49 before he was dismissed with just 8 runs required for victory.

Reis Forder and George Daniel held their nerve to give the boys a well-deserved 3-wicket victory.

An excellent all-round team performance.

U15s v West Buckland

Shebbear U15s lost by 146 runs to West Buckland U15s

In the first cricket match of the year, Shebbear’s U15s lost heavily to a very good West Buckland team.  Having been put into the field, several fielding errors by the home side allowed the visitors score to reach 220-4. In reply, Shebbear were bowled out for 74 with Mathew Jones top scoring with 14. The pick of the bowlers was Charlie Kivell who took  2-42. Jack Cherrington, Tim Hyland took the other two wickets to fall.

1st XI v Kelly College

The 1st XI bounced back from their defeat at West Buckland on Saturday with a resounding victory at KellyCollege on Wednesday.Batting first, we were given a solid platform with Rob Chapman and Andy Collier putting on 45 for the second wicket. The middle order all chipped in with Dan Buckland (28), PeterBowes (16) and Walter Medlicott (20*) all making useful contributions. The innings closed with the scoreon 168-9 from 35 overs.

Both Peter Bowes and Sam Spry bowled well early on torestrict the Kelly batsmen, but it was the changebowlerswho did the real damage. Jack Hatton ripped through the Kelly batting with figures of 5-9 from his 7 overs and Clara Nielson gave him great support, taking 3-15 in 6 overs.

A good all round team performance with the bowlers particularly well-supported by some excellent catching and ground fielding.

2nd XI v Kelly College

For the first time for nearly 15 years Shebbear was able to field a 2nd XI and the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Batting first Tim Brown got them off to a good start before he was run out after scoring 21. James Adams then took over hitting 6 boundaries in his 31 and then Ryan Skinner added a few more to take the final score to 119 all out in the final over.

Unfortunately, the bowlingwasnot good enough and, with the exception of Josh Corby who returned the excellent figures of 3-12 from his 5 overs, the Kelly batsmen scored freely and were comfortable winners by 5 wickets with some 7 overs still to be bowled.

Rounder’s results 2010

2 nd team V Kingsley

Shebbear lost 14-7

Despite consistent bowling from Laura Davis the Shebbear team could not match the hitting power of the Kingsley team. The first innings score was close at 7-5, but in the second innings Shebbear made costly decisions with their fielding and were unable to hit the ball with any success. Top scorers were Yasmin Chappell and Laura Wood.

U14 rounders team V St Josephs

Shebbear won 7-3 ½

In this first game of the season Shebbear looked strong and competent from the start. The opposition were unable to field effectively against our hitting power and the score mounted steadily. The first innings score was 4 ½ - 3. In the second half the strong combination of Charlotte Batambeau as bowler, Peggy Kirkwood at backstop and Hannah Clarke on first post stumped out the majority of the St Josephs team. This was supported by good fielding from the rest of the team. Top scorer was Ezmay Jopling.

U15 rounders team V Kingsley

Shebbear won 7-3

Despite losing two team players to the after affects of ten tors training, the u15’s proved to have players in the team who can turn their hands to a variety of roles. With Charlotte Wade bowling well throughout, the first innings score was 3-3. But in the second innings solid hitting and the right decisions whether to run meant we scored several ½ rounders. Our fielding and batting led to a deserved win.

U14 Rounders Vs Bude

The girls were very slow to get into the game with some very silly fielding errors which allowed Bude to score 8 rounders in the first half. When we batted the girls again, I think it was safe to say, were half asleep only scoring 2 rounders and the rest were made up of no balls giving us a total of 5.  The girls pulled themselves together in the second half and played at the much higher level they are capable of, only allowing bude to score 2½ rounders.  Their batting also improved,  we finally started hitting the ball over the Bude girls heads and racked up a very respectable 9½ rounders in the second half, winning the match 14½/9½. Player of the match was Anna Cherrington not only because she scored the most rounders but also for her positive attitude and real determination to win.

U14B team v St. Joseph’s

The U14s were left to find a B team at the last minute as the opposition arrived with a different age group than expected. However the girls adjusted themselves and set to the task. Unfortunately with the girls were unable to field sufficiently well to prevent St Joseph’s from scoring 10 ½ in their first innings with Shebbear only able to manage 2 in reply. The second innings brought better fielding however the damage was already done and the girls lost 14 ½ - 3 ½. Jess Lambert and Isabelle Seaton batted well and lead their team when fielding.

U15 v Bude

The U15s had a great game against Bude scoring 9 ½ in the first innings with some great batting by Chelsea ….. . They then fielded well with Beth and Lydia proving too good at backstop and first base limiting Bude to only 4 ½. The second innings was much closer. Bude’s fielding improved and Shebbear were unable to score as freely. Lauren Rodgerson scored many half rounders to keep the team’s total ticking over and take them to 14 ½. Their fielding was once again strong: Charlotte caught players out and Grace Beal fielded brilliantly out deep linking well with Jamie-Leigh to keep Bude’s scoring down. They tied the second innings 5 a piece, but Shebbear’s strong start ensured they were victorious 14 ¼ - 9 ½.

U15 v Kelly

Shebbear fielded first and each of Kelly had batted once they had only scored 1 rounder and their teacher was not happy with them. They picked up the pace, but Shebbear stayed strong and only let them score 5. Shebbear’s first innings was scrappy with many balls being hit straight to the bowler who throw to 1st to get our players out. Thankfully Chelsea, Lauren and Rose kept pushing and ensured Shebbear stayed in touch, also with 5. In the second innings Kelly stepped up and some misfield’s by Shebbear proved costly as Kelly scored a further 6. Jamie-Leigh thought quickly on occasions linking very well with Lauren to get some players out on third but it was not enough. Shebbear batted last and had a lot to do. They started well scoring 3 from the first 10 balls, however they then struggled to find the gaps and hit balls straight to the fielders. The final score was 11-8 ½ to Kelly.

Cricket

U13s v Plymouth College

The U13 continued their excellent form with a deserved victory at Plymouth College on Saturday.

Having put Plymouth in to bat, despite some good bowling by James Dawe, Tom Cappleman-Lynes and Conner Roberts, the others bowled far too many wides which helped the home side to a total of 157-7 in 31 overs.

However, a positive start saw the boys well up with the required rate and despite losing early wickets Tom Cappleman-Lynes (60*) and Bailey Ward(27) saw the side close in on victory, before a late flurry of wickets set the nerves on edge. But Tom Cappleman-Lynes stayed focused to see us home with 4 wickets and 3 overs in hand.

Plymouth College 157-7 J Dawe 2-21, T Cappleman-Lynes 2-16, C Roberts 1-26

Shebbear College 158-6 T Cappleman-Lynes (60*) B Ward 27

Rounders

Shebbear 1st vs. Budehaven 1st  Rounders

On Wednesday the Shebbear first team played rounders against Budehaven. The team started well, with strong fielding by Louise Way and Cecilia Cheng, containing the Bude score to 41/2 rounders.

Shebbear continued this spirit into the batting innings, and with outstanding batting by Elizabeth Trask, the teams were equal after the first innings.

The second innings saw stronger team spirit and with Polly Jopling’s consistently good batting, it enabled the Shebbear team to win 81/2  to 71/2. A very good team effort, well done girls!

Player of the match Elizabeth Trask.

Cricket U13's v St Michael's

Another outstanding teamperformance saw theU13s reach the quarter finals of the Devon Cup with acomprehensive victory over St Michael's yesterday.

Batting first, the top 5 all scored quick runs with Bailey Ward (45) and Tom Cappleman-Lynes (30) doing most of the damage tothe opposition's bowling figures and Shebbear scored a challenging 155-5 in their 20 overs.

St.Michael's clearly had some talented batsmen and despite losing an early wicket to a sharp catch by Tom Scantlebury, they scored quickly until a brilliant running catch by Bailey Ward removed their best batsman.

After that, some tight bowling from spinners Tom Cappleman-Lynes and Seb Hockridge sawthe team close in on victory and wickets fell regularly as St Michael's innings closed on 111-9.

U13 v Torquay Grammar

The U13s reached the semi-final of the Devon Cup with an impressive win over Torquay Grammar School. Batting first, the U13s scored 104-5 in their 20 overs with Tom Cappleman-Lynes top scoring with 30.

Then an excellent fielding display which saw Harry Landymore take 4 catches and Reece Stanbury 2, supporting off-spinner Tom Cappleman-Lynes who finished with figures of 5-10, saw the opposition dismissed for 55 in the 15th over.

U13 v Kingsley

The U13s had an emphatic victory - the of the season at Kingsley School on S aturday. Putting the opposition in, they bowled them out for just 48 and knocked off the runs for the loss of just 1 wicket.

U12 ROUNDERS V BUDE

The 1st form were nervous for their first match of the year but they needn’t have been. They fielded first and were on form from the beginning with Meghan bowling only two non balls in the whole innings and Harriet, Bronwyn and Storm fielding superbly to prevent Bude from scoring many. With 2 ½ scored by Bude in the first innings Shebbear batted with high hopes. Kay and Gemma were the top scorers and led the team to 9 at the change.

In the second innings the fielding was not so slick. Errors crept in and the team relaxed knowoing they had a substantial lead. This opened the door to Bude who took advantage, however Shebbear’s first innings total was too high. Harriet led the scoring in the second innings and although the Bude won 7-5 for the second innings, Shebbear were victorious 14-9 ½.

U12 ROUNDERS V ST JOSEPHS

The U12s travelled to Launceston for the rounders match against St. Joseph’s. They were expecting a close game as the previous hockey and netball fixtures had mixed results. Shebbear’s fielding in the first innings was back on form with St Joseph’s only scoring 1 ½ rounder in the first 20 balls, but concentration slipped just a little on the final 7 balls and a further 3 rounders were scored. Thankfully their batting was up to scratch and led by Storm the team scored 8 rounders.

With a significant lead into the second innings their aim was not to lapse like in the previous match. They remained focused and only allowed St Joseph’s to score 1 more rounder. With victory already in the bag they batted for fun and in a shortened innings still scored 3 ½ to win the game 11 ½ - 5 ½. There were excellent catches by Bronwyn, Kay (2), Olivia (2) and by player of the match: Storm Cockcroft .

U13 ROUNDERS V KELLY COLLEGE

Kelly batted first and the U13s kept their scoring down for the first 15 balls. However misfielding and slow decisions then enabled Kelly College to score with ease taking 9 ½. Shebbear hoped to bat in a similar fashion but they were unable to hit and found themselves against very fast fielding between backstop and first base. All of Shebbear were out having only scored 1 ½.

In the second innings they did improve and limited Kelly to 7 rounders, but when they took to the bat, they managed to hit the ball but to a fielder and were caught out.

The final score was 2 – 16 ½

U12 ROUNDERS V KINGSLEY

The U12s won the toss and elected to field, however they were not up to their usual standard. Kingsley struggled to hit the ball and yet because of the loose fielding by the first years they still managed to score 4 rounders. The girls knew they had to pick it up and did so scoring 7 with great late runs by Meaghan and Rebecca. The second innings was shorter and Shebbear tightened up their fielding a little but still let Kingsley score a further 2 ½. Having already secured the win Shebbear batted again and in only 15 balls scored 6 ½ rounders to win 13 ½ - 6 ½. Joey Yeung played in her first game and scored a rounder on her first ball, well done!

In a game where they certainly did not play their best, they still managed to win and Meaghan was named Player of the Match.

U13s Devon Cup Semi-Finals and Final day

The U13s played Devonport H.S. in their semi final match but despite scoring an impressive 132-0 in their 20 overs, it was not enough to stop the opposition going through to the final. Tom Cappleman-Lynes (61*) and James Dawe (42*) scored the runs in that game, but the bowling was rather wayward at times and it looked as though the boys were suffering from their overnight ferry trip from France.

So, in the 3rd/4th place play off match after lunch, South Dartmoor's total of 169-5 in 20 overs looked to be insurmountable.

Resting the two openers from the semi final, their replacements Bailey Ward (39) and Reece Stanbury (43) got us off to a good start, but we still needed to score at 10 an over with 8 overs remaining. Then,in came Tom Cappleman-Lynes and with 8 runs required from the last 2 balls, he smashed both to the boundary to go to a half century and secure a thrilling victory.

And so ended a great day's cricket with the boys thoroughly deserving their 3rd place trophies.
