With regular book displays, the library is always an attractive place to visit as well as being a quiet place for private study.
In line with our school policy to promote reading and individual learning, a number of initiatives are held throughout the year.
Each autumn, in conjunction with the popular Appledore Book Festival, we have had visits to the college from authors of children’s literature. In addition to the regular Teen Book Club, we hold a Readathon annually which not only encourages pupils to read but also raises money for charity. During the Summer Term pupils are encouraged to participate in Shadowing the Carnegie Award and enjoy taking part in the North Devon Schools event where there is always another opportunity to listen to an author talk about their work.
The library provides study facilities, computer access and a selection of books, magazines, digital and other resources to support pupils and staff with their academic work and in reading for pleasure.
The college collection of books is supplemented by an exchange collection from the Schools’ Library Service to which Shebbear College subscribes. Books are exchanged at regular intervals which a good way of ensuring that our library is kept up to date. In addition, topic collections can be ordered by staff to support work in the classrooms.
The library is available to all members of the college community throughout the school day.
Shebbear College is an independent UK school, a co-educational day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18, located in rural North Devon.
