With regular book displays, the library is always an attractive place to visit as well as being a quiet place for private study.
In line with our school policy to promote reading and individual learning, a number of initiatives are held throughout the year.
Each Autumn, in conjunction with the popular Appledore Book Festival, we have had visits to the college from authors of children’s literature. In addition to the regular Cover2Cover Book Club, each year we hold a Readathon which not only encourages pupils to read but also raises money for charity. During the Summer Term pupils are encouraged to participate in Shadowing the Carnegie Award and enjoy taking part in the North Devon Schools event where there is another opportunity to listen to an author talk about their work.
The library provides study facilities, computer access and a selection of books, magazines and other resources to support pupils and staff with their academic work and for recreational activities.
The college collection of books is supplemented by an exchange collection from the Schools’ Library Service to which Shebbear College subscribes. These books can be exchanged at regular intervals – a good way of ensuring that our library is kept up to date.
Books can be borrowed by all members of the college community and a simple issuing system enables loans to be made at any time. In addition, topic collections can be ordered by staff to support work in the classrooms.
Shebbear College is an independent UK school, a co-educational day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18, located in rural North Devon.
