The successful challenge was the result of months of training and determination which saw the teams up on Dartmoor at the weekends, sometimes in appalling weather conditions.

According to College records going back some 15 years for the Ten Tors event this is was the largest number of starters and finishers from Shebbear to date. Well done all!

This event is being organised by Sixth former Daniel Lee, who is taking part in the 2013 expedition to Uganda. The children enjoyed lunch and refreshments during the day and a number of parents turned up to see the final results, with the vehicles being raced against each other. The category of most stylish design was judged by the headmaster and prizes of £25.00 Amazon Gift Vouchers were awarded to the winning teams. Each pupil received a certificate and a goody bag before enjoying drinks and cakes with their parents in the dining hall.

Last week also saw interviews for the posts of Head of MFL and a teacher of MFL to replace Mr Jorgenson and Miss Hily as from September. Pleasingly this attracted another strong field and Mrs ChistineFanet was appointed Head of Department and Mrs Judith Aliberti 2nd in Department.

We look forward to welcoming these new members of staff in September.

SPORTS MORNING – Saturday 16th June 2012

Both of these activities start at 9.00am and finish at 12.00 noon, followed by a BBQ to which parents are invited.

The charity auction to be held at the Michaelmas Ball in the grounds of Shebbear College on Saturday 29^th September promises to be a very exciting event following the donation of a rare Titanic print signed by the last survivor.

The Old Shebbearians’ Association and Friends of Shebbear College have joined forces to organise the Ball which promises to be grander than previous black tie events. The Ball will accommodate 350 guests in a grand marquee and everyone is invited to what will be a most memorable evening, to include a champagne bar, 3 course gourmet dinner, live music from ‘Cover’d’, a prize draw and auction.

The funds raised from the Ball will be split between the Friends of Shebbear College and the Old Shebbearians’ Association and will ultimately benefit the pupils at Shebbear College. As author Michael Morpurgo has supported the College recently, it has also been decided that the prize draw, to be held on the evening, will be in aid of his local charity ‘Farms for City Children’.

Renowned marine artist Rodney Charman has donated the Titanic print, signed by Millvina Dean, the last Titanic survivor and youngest passenger, before she passed away in 2009. Millvina was nine weeks old when the liner sank after hitting an iceberg on the night of 14^th April 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton. Although too young to remember the disaster, she explained to the artist that she had been handed over the side of the ship to her mother in a lifeboat by her father who stayed onboard and perished in the tragedy. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people in the North Atlantic, largely due to a lack of lifeboats. It was only because of her quick thinking father that they survived, he heard the collision, went to investigate and then returned telling her mother to dress their sleeping children and go up on deck.  Millvina, her mother and brother were placed in Lifeboat 10 and were among the first of the steerage passengers to escape the sinking liner.

Having decided to emigrate to America, hoping to start a new life and run a tobacconist shop in Kansas City, Millvina’s family were not supposed to be aboard the Titanic, but owing to a coal strike, they were transferred to the ship and boarded it as third class passengers at Southampton.

After the disaster Millvina’s family returned to Southampton where she lived most of her life. In later years Millvina began struggling with monthly bills of £3,000 at her Southampton care home and had been in danger of losing her room. She began selling some of her own Titanic memorabilia to raise funds. Titanic movie actors Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio contributed towards her care costs, as did the film’s director James Cameron.

Painstakingly researched and historically accurate, the wonderful print is a reproduction of an original oil painting depicting the dramatic moment as Titanic edges away from Southampton Dock at the beginning of her fateful voyage. The print has also been signed and numbered by the artist and is one of a very limited edition, beautifully mounted and framed with both signatures on show and is supplied with a certificate of authenticity. Guests attending the Ball will have a unique opportunity to bid for this truly historic, collectable item.
