The performance included a magical collection of Julia Donaldson’s most popular titles including ‘Tiddler’, ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’, ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ and ‘Monkey Puzzle’ were brought spectacularly to life.

Under sea, over land, on the farm and in the jungle, these tales were woven together with live music, songs, puppets and a host of colourful characters to the delight of children and staff.

In the Memorial Hall on Friday 14th June from 7.00 – 9.00pm.

As the name suggests, there will be a pick ‘n’ mix sweets stall and a variety of music, drama and comedy acts being performed on stage. Refreshments will be available and there will even be an unexpected surprise for one guest!

Tickets are £3.00 on the door or see organisers Jennie Martin and Summer Dunscombe. Proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Society.

On Thursday 11th June Form 1 visited Buckfast Abbey; a medieval abbey on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park.

First we watched a video about the history of the abbey and the monks who live there. The abbey was built in the 14th century but was demolished by Henry VIII in 1538. When some French monks came over to the site in 1882 they decided to rebuild the abbey using the foundations from medieval times. Four monks built the abbey by hand with only one of the monks being trained as a stonemason. There are still monks at the abbey today and later on in the day we interviewed one of them and asked some interesting questions and got some interesting answers.

But before we interviewed a monk we went to the education centre on the site and got busy with some interactive activities. We learnt a lot about how the abbey was made and about the monks. Some of the activities included using a hoist to pull a 41kg stone up. The hoist was the original one used to build the abbey. We also got to try on a hood that a monk would wear. All the monks at the abbey were Benidictine monks which meant that they followed the rules set by St. Benedict. We also had to try and rebuild different parts of the abbey using scaled down pieces of foam and wood. We had to try and rebuild an arch, the frame for a stained glass window and a spiral staircase. We could also design a mosaic, tile floor and a stained glass window and we also saw some of the renowned Buckfast bees.

We found out how people in medieval times thought that the Black Death could be transmitted and cured – by sniffing herbs or by going to see a monk. These weren’t the only ways to ‘cure’ the plague but these were some of the most popular. After a talk we played a game to show us how quickly the plague spread throughout Europe killing 1 in 3 people. The game involved throwing a dice to see how many people would stay in a place and whether or not they would pass the plague on to the town they stayed in or the next one they were going to. We saw whether or not someone had the plague by picking beans out of a bag and if they had a black dot on them it meant that someone had the black death.

The day was very interesting and everyone learnt something that they can take home with them and use in the future (in your history exams Form 1 !!! ). It was a very enjoyable day despite the slightly wet weather and everyone went home tired but with lots to tell. Thank you to Mr Rogers,  Mr Jeggo and Mrs Blundell for taking everyone on the trip.

During the course pupils learnt about different scenarios affecting people in the world, for example the slave trade, in which a big number of children have been forced into work because they have to feed their families.  Cotton farmers, for example, preferred using child workers because their hands are small enough to pick the cotton out of the plant and they don’t have to pay them much money.

Throughout the course of the day pupils got to experience role play, which was very interesting as they got to know how the people in each type of situation dealt with different questions. The roles ranged from the chief executive to the cotton pickers who pick the cotton to make the clothes for the chief executives to then sell.

Furthermore, pupils watched videos with life changing stories giving them ideas on how they could help just a little bit by buying Fairtrade products; they could see that it doesn’t have to be a big change, just a change in ‘buying’ attitude.

After the group had looked at all the problems and how to solve them, they then looked at different types of events that they could do to raise awareness about Fairtrade. Some examples were the ‘Justin Bieber’ type of event – looks good but doesn’t do much, or the ‘cherry tree’ type which is a small event but grabs people’s attention or finally the ‘elephant’ – the huge event that raises a lot of attention and gets people involved.

Ailis Prowse in form 5 took part in the event “In my group there were six of us and we decided to do a ‘cherry tree’ event; we are planning to do a fairtrade cake sale at this year’s sports day with fairtrade facts which will help raise awareness of people affected when fair trade is not used. This was a great course to be a part of and it changed my opinion of a lot of problems that people face, it was an amazing experience.”

The pupils held their own Fairtrade themed event over the past few months; some raising awareness and others raising money. The pupils that have done a Fairtrade action have now received their Fairtrade Leader Certificate.

Taking part in an activity with the theme of ‘In the Woods’ the children followed foot prints to find some of Ted Bears friends hiding in the woods before finding Big Ted. Once found, they explored the environment looking for other animals that inhabit the woods. Beetles, newts, spiders, centipedes and beetle lava were amongst animals found, which most were happy to inspect at close quarters!

After putting the animals back close to where they had been found, they made their own clay animals using twigs and objects found nearby. Walking back to the school rooms more of Big Ted’s friends were found hiding amongst the trees and bushes.

Following a picnic lunch, everyone enjoyed playing in The Brash before a much quieter trip back to school in the minibus with all the children agreeing that they would love to go on a bear hunt again!
