Psychology is offered only to those in the sixth form and follows the OCR syllabus and as such offers accreditation at either As or A2 level. The content of the course has been designed to capture and inspire the learner’s natural interest in psychology and highlights the links to modern life and the behaviour of others, which students find appealing.
The department is well equipped and makes use of a variety of resources that includes interactive whiteboards, computer with internet provision and interactive text books. The department also benefits from access to ultra modern computer suites and a well stocked library.
Psychology is taught to relatively small groups, between 10 and 4 students, and of whom the department has high expectations. Students are stretched, yet supported, to achieve a high level of understanding, confidence and application. The AS course is delivered over two modules. The first module investigates the methods used by psychologists in research studies – experiments, observations, self-reports and correlations. The second module investigates five areas of Psychology; Cognitive, Developmental, Physiological, Social and Individual Differences. This is achieved by studying fifteen Psychological studies from the late 1800s to the present day. The A2 course involves completion of the AS modules and a further two modules. This final year offers a choice to students to study two topics from the following areas of Psychology; Health, Education, Sport, and Crime. The final module is a synoptic module which requires students to demonstrate their understanding of the key approaches, perspectives, methods, issues and debates within Psychology covered throughout the course.
