Physical Education

The PE Department aims to ensure that all students have the opportunity to maximise their potential with the combined aims of developing all individual’s personal and physical skills in a fun, safe and effective learning environment. We aim to enthuse students about our subject and not only develop their concern for and understanding of their own physical well being and development, but ensure that they are motivated to continue participation in physical activities post school.

Department Overview

Our fundamental aim is to ensure that all students enjoy their lessons. Without enjoyment it is difficult to develop the essential skills that are the essence of PE. We aim to develop individual’s personal skills i.e. their Self-Confidence, Communication, Group Work and Leadership skills within the curricular and extra-curricular programmes, to actively prepare them for life, both within the College and in their future careers. Physical skills are also developed, not only to ensure that each pupil maximises his/her potential in their given sports, but also to provide students with an invaluable awareness of how their bodies work and respond to exercise. The College prides itself on the impressive fixture list of its school teams and we derive immense pride from all our students’ performances. The autumn term is dominated by rugby for the boys and netball for the girls. The spring term is mainly football for the boys and hockey for the girls, although both rugby 7’s and netball continue. This term also heralds the start of our cross-country season and with such a large site there are plenty of scenic routes to enjoy! Basketball is played throughout the autumn and spring terms and we compete in the North Devon leagues for all ages. The summer term brings about cricket and rounders for the boys and girls respectively, although neither are mutually exclusive. Indeed we have a history of many boys and girls going onto play for the county. The summer also offers our athletes the opportunity to pursue glory, both at school and at the regional athletics championships. The tennis courts attract a lot attention in the summer and all students from forms 1-5 will be taught tennis as well as having the opportunity to play recreationally. All students follow a health related fitness programme and we also teach badminton, climbing, gymnastics/ trampolining and many other activities.

Facilities

Shebbear College has excellent sports facilities throughout the 85 acre school site, with: - first class games pitches, (rugby, hockey, football & cricket) - a large indoor sports hall, - fully equipped weight training gym, - indoor basketball courts, - three tennis courts - two squash courts - four badminton courts - fully equipped cardiovascular fitness centre - three netball courts - specialist indoor climbing hall - and of course top class professional sports coaching.

In the Classroom

Physical Education at GCSE and AS/A2 level has continued to grow in popularity on a national level and that increase has been reflected at Shebbear College where, over the years, a large number of students have achieved a consistently high percentage pass rate. We believe that a combination of staff expertise, pupil enthusiasm and small class teaching have enabled our students to achieve their true potential in this subject.

GCSEs

Board and syllabus: AQA syllabus for the full course Physical Education. The course is divided into two sections:

(a) Practical (60%) This focuses on the effective performance and analysis of physical activities and assesses four activities from a wide range of games, athletics and swimming. This aspect of the course is continuously assessed and externally moderated.

(b) Theory (40%) This area of study considers factors affecting performance and participation in physical activity and is sub-divided into four sections:

AS/A2 Level

AS/A2 Level Those students who wish to take their studies further will study:

Again, there are exams in June (70%) and an assessment of the practical coursework – a detailed study of two chosen activities (30%). Advanced Level is widely recognised as a valid and valuable qualification and the specifications of the subject provide an excellent foundation for students intending to pursue careers in teaching and coaching, sports development, the leisure industry, recreational management, the health and fitness industry and professional sport.

Beyond the Classroom

We offer an extensive extra-curricular programme which not only involves the high quality coaching of our school teams, but is inclusive to all pupils who wish to participate. In addition to the traditional activities of rugby, football, cricket, netball, hockey, tennis, rounders, athletics, basketball and cross-country, we also run fitness, table-tennis, badminton, dance, squash and karate. We are also fortunate to boast the largest school’s indoor climbing wall in the South West. These activities are supported by our outdoor recreation programme and ‘The Big Days Out’ which include rock climbing, surfing, horse riding, sailing, kayaking, orienteering, skiing and Ten Tors. We aim to offer our students a wide range of activities that allow them to experience a variety of challenges that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The emphasis is on enjoyment and life-long learning within a caring and structured environment.
