Physical Education
The PE Department aims to ensure that all students have the opportunity to maximise their potential with the combined aims of developing all individual’s personal and physical skills in a fun, safe and effective learning environment. We aim to enthuse students about our subject and not only develop their concern for and understanding of their own physical well being and development, but ensure that they are motivated to continue participation in physical activities post school.

Department Overview
At Shebbear College we understand that Physical Education plays an integral role in ensuring that all pupils stay healthy by achieving physical, social, cultural and mental well-being. We believe that physical activity provides individuals with the opportunity to acquire and develop skills which will stand them in good stead for future challenges and ensures that pupils receive a well-rounded, broad education. All pupils are encouraged to take part in some form of sporting activity whatever their aspirations or ability and develop an understanding of how their body works in response to exercise. Above all we emphasise the values of commitment, teamwork, communication and enjoyment, all of which are invaluable in everyday life.
Our fixture list for Games is extensive and competition is encouraged at all level’s giving pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and achieve their aims. For boys the major games are rugby, football and cricket and for the girls major games are hockey, netball and rounders. Rugby 7’s is also played by the boys during the Spring term. The department also runs many inter-house games making physical activity further accessible within the school.
Facilities
Our excellent facilities include a Sports Hall with indoor Basketball, Badminton, Tennis, Netball and Volleyball courts, Trampolines, a New Fitness Suite (treadmills, bikes, rowers, wave machines) a New Astroturf (2009), Weights Room, Dance Studio, Rugby Pitches, Football Pitches, Cricket Squares, Pavilions, Hockey Pitches, Netball Courts, Rounders Pitches, an Outdoor Volleyball Court, a Climbing Wall, Shooting Range and Outdoor Tennis Courts.
In the Classroom
Physical Education at GCSE and AS/A2 level has continued to grow in popularity on a national level and that increase has been reflected at Shebbear College where, over the years, a large number of students have achieved a consistently high percentage pass rate. We believe that a combination of staff expertise, pupil enthusiasm and small class teaching have enabled our students to achieve their true potential in this subject.
Academic qualifications are offered in GCSE PE Studies and A Level Sport Studies. Teaching prepares all pupil’s for both the workplace and higher education whatever their desire. At GCSE level pupils are assessed on their ability to acquire and develop individual and group skills as well as apply them in performance, umpiring and coaching situations. An understanding of the theoretical concepts that underpin participation in physical activity is also developed. ‘A’ Level assessment is modular and subject areas are as wide ranging as Anatomy and Physiology to Sport Psychology to Contemporary Sporting Issues. Practical assessment requires pupil’s to acquire, develop and evaluate practical skills as well as improve effective performance and critically evaluate practical activities.
Examination Boards AQA GCSE 60% Practical 40% Theory (Includes coursework)
OCR ‘A’ Level 50% AS of which 30% = Written Examination and 20% = Practical
