Modern Languages

To learn another language is to discover a completely new culture! Here at Shebbear College we actively encourage all pupils to appreciate foreign languages - principally French, Spanish and German with Italian on offer too.

Department Overview

Pupils begin their French lessons in the Junior School with Mrs Foster, using the very enjoyable La Jolie Ronde course, full of songs and games. In Forms 1 to 5 everyone studies French apart from those needing Learning Support or English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons.Spanish, German and Italian are also available during Activities Time after lessons with Spanish GCSE available as an Option in Form 4, subject to take-up.

We commence the French GCSE course in Form 3, giving us three years to aim for the very highest level of achievement. In the Sixth Form French and Spanish AS/A2 Levels are available with Mr Jorgensen and Mrs Foster respectively. Classes are small, such as our 2006 Upper Sixth French group pictured above.

Facilities

Both Mr Jorgenson and Mrs Foster have interactive whiteboards in their classrooms which really makes learning fun! We also use video, DVD, CD-Rom and audio equipment for maximum exposure to the target language. We also have individual listening facilities for AS/A2 work.

In the Classroom

More effective learning takes place when pupils are actively involved and this is our aim in the Modern Languages Department. The atmosphere is lively yet controlled!

GCSEs

We use Edexcel at the moment, aiming for Higher Tier Listening, Reading and Speaking and incorporating the written coursework element.

AS Level

At AS and A2 Level we use the OCR specification.

Beyond the Classroom

The school is keen for pupils to journey abroad as much as possible. For example Form 2 usually has a visit to France scheduled for Activities Week in June, whilst Form 3 may travel to France or another European country. This year Form 3 combined Language with History and went to the World War One battlefields of the Somme (see picture above). We make full use of multimedia opportunities, bringing the world to Shebbear!Useful websites which can be used at home include: Languages online, Chez Mimi (use Google to access these websites quickly), www.bbc.co.uk/languages , and for Sixth Formers: www.aupoint.nelson.co.uk , www.lemonde.fr and www.tf1.fr .
