Media

Media Studies offers the opportunity to look at the role the media plays in our lives on a daily basis by acquiring a foundation in the main concepts and debates of Media Studies. Production work is an important part of the course where students put theory into practice, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of technical skills, like photography and filming, in their own media production. Media Studies can be a creative, imaginative and artistic activity as well as an intellectual and analytical subject.

At AS the students will produce a Foundation Portfolio in Media coursework in addition to an externally assessed examination based around the analysis of TV Drama.

The Lower Sixth are currently working on producing a music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. They are also undertaking cross-curricular filming projects too.

The A2 course builds upon this strong foundation with externally assessed examinations on the Theoretical Evaluation of Production and Contemporary Media Issues. However, in Media Studies in addition to academic success we also appreciate the need for practical skills with multiple benefits in the modern workplace; therefore students are asked to produce a further piece of coursework which entails planning and research, storyboarding, intertextuality in  music, familiarity with technical equipment, scheduling, location selection, appreciation of mise-en-scene, filming, editing, design and advertisement of a music video.

The Upper Sixth are filming their own music videos and creating digipaks for their featured artist.

In March there is a Media Studies educational visit to Euro Disney where students will attend a Media Live! conference about jobs in the Media and listen to key speakers in this field. The students have been encouraged to enter a competition which gives them the chance to showcase their work which will be shown in front of their fellow students and the panel of speakers. Their task is to create a TV advertisement on a theme of their choice.

The following 2 films were made by Amy Thompson and Lydia Scambler.
