Department Overview

In the last 10 years the ESL Department has had students from all over the world, including Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Spain, France, Thailand and Russia. Students follow the route of  English qualifications offered by Cambridge University, from the KET (Key English Test),  to PET (Preliminary English Test), FCE (First Certificate in English) and finally IELTS (International English Language Testing System), which is required for University entrance in the UK. More capable students will also be offered the opportunity to take a GCSE English course.

. The ESL Department at Shebbear College aims to make learning English enjoyable and  relevant to studies in all other areas of the curriculum.  When students first arrive at the College their language needs are assessed, and  a programme is prepared to help each individual make steady and  strong progress. During the 6th form students are taught English through the Cambridge University IELTs course, enabling them to apply for College or University places.

Mrs Back has taught English as a Second Language for over 16 years, and having recently completed her MA in English Literature, is keen to awaken and encourage an interest in reading and literature for its own sake as well as for its benefits to wider learning.  Classes frequently practice their speaking skills in both formal and informal situations, often using current events to spark off discussion. Mrs Back works closely with the English Department teachers and the College Librarian, and also liaises with other subject teachers to support learning.

In the Classroom

We follow the Cambridge EFL Exam courses which will help the students in all areas of life, academically, socially and  in the workplace.

KET: Key English Test
Learners at this level are expected to build on their basic communication in a range of everyday situations with both native and non-native speakers of English. For example, carrying out transactions, giving and obtaining factual information and establishing and maintaining social and professional contacts.

PET: Preliminary English Test
Learners at this level are expected to communicate satisfactorily in most everyday situations with both native and non-native speakers of English. For example, understanding public notices, scanning texts for information, giving information, reporting events and describing and talking freely in order to express desires and emotions.

FCE: First Certificate in English
Learners at this level are expected to be able to handle the main structures of the language with some confidence, demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary and use appropriate communicative strategies in a variety of social situations.

IELTS: International English Language Testing System
This course prepares you for studying English at a higher level. It is designed to assess the ability to understand and produce written and spoken language in an educational context.

GCSE English:
Students will study and respond to three literary texts (a Shakespeare play, short novel and poetry). They will also be assessed on Speaking and Listening skills, and Imaginative Writing. The exam element will test their understanding of media and non-fiction language.

Beyond the Classroom

The Department actively encourages students to live as much of an English life as possible. In their short holidays they are advised to find an English speaking guardian so that they can continue to develop their Speaking and Listening skills in a natural environment.

Form 4 students are expected to participate fully in Work Experience. This gives direct and invaluable experience of being in an English workplace and gives another perspective of English life.

Students are taken to local areas of interest to stimulate their use of English in real situations, for example in conducting conversations and interviews with shopkeepers.  West Country tourist spots are visited to enhance their understanding of the culture and environment.

Students are encouraged to take part in various International Awards throughout the year, including Hobson’s International Boarder of the Year Award and the International Student Awards which is run by the British Council. We have had success in both competitions.
