Chemistry

In the chemistry laboratory students are encouraged to develop an appreciation of the World around them by learning about the structure and properties of materials. A wide range of creative teaching methods are used to bring about effective learning during a stimulating and enjoyable journey through the curriculum..

Department Overview

Chemistry is a fun subject at one level, and, a highly academic subject at another level. The philosophy at Shebbear is to engage all students with the subject at the “fun” level, and, connect with as many as possible at the more serious academic level. Certainly, the subject is an extremely popular one at the College. Moreover, the GCSE and A-level examination results over recent years have been outstandingly good.

Facilities

Chemistry is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities following total refurbishment of the laboratory in March, 2006. No expense was spared in order to provide students with a pleasant and modern learning environment.

In the Classroom

A purposeful approach to preparing for public examinations is adopted at all times. We follow the stringent EDEXCEL courses. These courses are very robust academically and provide an excellent foundation and preparation for A-level.

GCSE

EDEXCEL Double Award Science is taken by virtually all of the students. Chemistry is one of the three branches of science covered in this highly respected qualification. Practical coursework is carried out during lesson time. The work is both interesting and informative; providing a good overview of the relevance of chemistry to modern society.

AS Chemistry

The EDEXCEL course aims to stimulate interest in, and, enjoyment of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. During the course, students are trained to develop their ability to acquire knowledge. New laboratory skills are taught which involve complex procedures and techniques. An imaginative and creative approach to problem-solving, including the use of lateral thinking, is cultivated. Finally, the ability to think in an abstract and conceptual way at a high level is emphasized.

A2 Chemistry

The themes explored at AS-level are continued, but this time, with much more emphasis on the mathematical treatment of the information. Practical coursework accounts for 20% of the total marks. This work is performed and assessed during normal lesson time. This removes the need for a “hit or miss” practical examination.
